What are the basics of APA Format?

Every writing content follows a specific structure. This applies to academic writing, article, and blog writing, among others. You see, as a student, writing is inevitable. You will interact with various types of written content. All of this will require research. To ensure your findings are understandable, your paragraphs should have a smooth transition. This goes without saying that as a student, you need to know how to format your essays. APA style is one of the most commonly applied writing formats. Here is the raw format of APA:

  • General rules

There are several significant elements you should consider when writing your research paper using the APA formatting style. Always have a running head on every page. The header is a summary of your title.

  1. Fonts

APA format highly recommends the use of Times New Romans, size 12. It is advisable to use the same font and size throughout the essay; this includes the page header, page numbers, headings, subheadings, and reference pages.

  1. Title/Cover Page

It is the opening page to present the essential details. The characters should not exceed 60 words. It should have the title of the essay, school affiliation, and the student's name on it.

  1. Abstract

The abstract page should have a page header and typed on a new page. On the first line on your new page, center, and bold the word Abstract, please note that italics, quotation marks, and underlining are allowed. On this page, write down summaries of critical topics of your study essay. The page must consist of your research topic, partakers, methods used, results found, and conclusion. Always ensure that your abstract is double-spaced, and the word count should not be more than 250 words. In case your instructor wants you to include some keywords in your abstract, do it in italic, and then list your keywords.

Where two authors are involved, the surname of both authors is detailed. For example, Jane and White (2020) state… Or (Jane & White, 2020). For three or more writers, all names are in the first cite. For the rest of the citation, always write the first author's surname and add et al. at the end.: for example, White et al. (2020) or (White et al., 2017). When the author is unknown, you should use the title of the work or a few words from the reference.
